Yeah, boys at the skate park are intimidating, it feels like they're just waiting for you to fail so they can scoff at you. I've been skating since I was little, although I haven't tried any tricks 'til just recently, and I'm extremely self-conscious. I can Ollie now, after watching multiple how to's online; and to practice more tricks, I go to the skate park at night when everyone's cleared out (even the stoners) and put on a hat and a baggy sweater so that people will think I'm a boy (which is easy because I have short hair). I'm just really scared of being judged, because no matter how AWESOME it is, girls here just don't skate, and they (girls) don't accept the ones who do.. but I've always loved it. None of my friends know I can skate, or that I'm even into it, and I have to lie about my injuries (cuts, scrapes, bruises) because I'm so afraid of what they'd think, but I'd like to get a lot better so I can actually go there in the daytime and show up some of those cocky-a$s jerks. Just my little story.. I'll let you know if I get any better.. thanks. C:

Where I live there are no girl skaters. Guys are afraid of girls ruining the reputation of skaters,(in my opinion). I am a girl and I asked my friend who suggested i try it, why girls dont do it, and he said "they are afraid of getting hurt" and I think that's true. But I'm not and I hope in time more girls will try it and we'll all look back on this, like the age where women weren't aloud to wear pants, And laugh. lol

I think guys are just not that comfortable seeing girls being good at guy stuff. Don't let anything stop you from skating. It's the best thing ever!

Here's the thing Ashleigh, all the guys think it's awesome that you're skating and they secretly admire you, but they have no idea how to communicate with girls. So these guys make sarcastic comments and give you a hard time because they're insecure, they lack self confidence, and they're not sure what else to say. Ironically they don't want to look stupid and they think giving you a hard time makes them look tough, when in reality it just shows their lack of communication skills.

So just have a good time, do your thing, and recognize that these guys are all just little, scared boys inside who are trying to look tough. The day you meet a skater who compliments you instead of insulting you, then you've met a guy who was raised by some good parents who taught him how to treat a lady right.

My daughter just turned 21 and is a magnificent skateboarder (I'm not just saying this because she is my daughter either). She has only been skating about 5 yrs. She is sponsored by Dekine and Sasquatch Skateboards. She has won many competitions, but never even comes close to winning what the guys do.
In her age group 17-21 for girl she came in first and won an IPOD Charger, yes I said charger, even though they didn't even know if she had an IPOD!
the winner in the guys division won $500. That is Discrimination!! The girls never win the prizes guys do, she has even place above alot of the guys when skating against them. She is also on one of Monday's cover if you go to www.earthpatrol
So how does she get things to change? How does she turn pro?
Maybe you have some ideas.
Thank you for your time and for letting me vent some of my frustration!!
