Nike SB's are overpriced because it's a well known name, with not as much care put into the functional design. Created primarily to make money and attract the attention of sneaker collectors..the complete antithesis of what true skateboarding is about. And yes, all companies want to make money, but many brands also care about preserving the unique and individual skate culture which completely contradicts Nike's game plan.

They're basically ugly, sub par versions of Nike's basketball shoes. Too clunky for their own good if you ask me, but nowhere near as atrocious as the monstrosities Osiris is sh*tting out. I myself DO collect some sneakers just to wear out and look nice. But for that I get Jordans and actual Nikes, not these poser SB's and Osiris which are just mimicking those designs.

From a purely technical standpoint, Nike SB's just do not feel like "real" skate shoes to me. The problem is they are created to be a fashion icon 1st and a skateboarding shoe 2nd.

As far as quality and skate ability, they do not hold up nearly as well as many smaller brands such as FALLEN who make the best skate shoes on the market in my opinion. They use classic time tested designs (similar to vans) and make them more durable and comfortable. I found some Fallen Fortes on sale for $20 today and got 2 pair because I know they are a quality product, and a great investment.

I'd like to continue supporting these companies much as I can. Today brands like this are the ones keeping the industry alive by focusing on simple, clean and functional designs and not over the top, hip hop influenced style that puts fashion before functionality! Everything a REAL skateboarding shoe should be. I use Fallen as one example because they are my personal favorite, but there are many other quality brands out there too. Nike SB just doesn't happen to be one of them in my honest opinion.

Any real skaters out there I urge you, Don't Do It if you want to keep the industry's roots and soul in tact. Rise With The Fallen!

Nike was responsible for the death of the tech skate shoes that is the norm on skate shoes. I mean Nike made SB versions of Dunks, Blazers & all other shit that cost too much. and the worst thing was skate shoe companies tried hard on copying the silhouettes of Nike's sneakers. Just wish that the true skate shoe companies would come to their senses & brings back the tech skate shoe...

As a retailer on the snowboard side, I think their mentality is ridiculous. Out of curiosity I stopped by their booth at a show a few years back and I wasn't even allowed to see a price list, was told to leave my card and that they would contact me if they were interested. Needless to say I didn't. I have also heard that they decide what a retailer buys in terms of quantity and models. In my opinion that's not how the snowboard or skate industry is supposed to be. I think its lame and I won't be buying them any time soon.

I've been skating for years, I've skated almost every brand of shoe out there, honestly Nike, adidas and even cons, make some of the most durable shoes, with the best boardfeel I have ever skated. Just give the janoskis, busenitz, or pappalardo a try, then try telling me you would rather skate a stiff shoe that rips in 2 days then a pair of janoskis

You know there's a reason why I never buy skate shoes. I mean, people are just into skate shoes because they think "Oh they look really cool that's why I want them" but I think this way: IF YOU DON'T DO IT, DON'T BUY IT. It really hurts me to see that skating is being taken advantage of because some boneheads just wanna make a quick buck out of it. Nike doesn't even deserve to put SB on their tongues anyway. I do own two pairs of Nike's, but they're not off the SB line. They're just basketball shoes, the thing that Nike does right. But I know why they stepped into skateboarding:

Back before Nike SB, skaters used Dunk's because they found that the Dunk wasn't just a basketball shoe. It offered everything that a skater needed in a shoe and that's why they were used.

It should've stayed that way. All companies are made to make money. So Nike decided to branch out into the skating divison and BAM! In 2002 they made their own colorful shoes for skating. Now the other skating shoes I've heard skate really good. But the Dunk and the Blazer were originally basketball shoes. If Nike wanted to make a skateboarding division, why did they have to use a pair of shoes that were clearly not cut out for it? And come on? They've made at least 1,000 colors out of the same shoe. Emerica and their Hsu, which I used to have (gave them away since I don't skate) are still, at most, on their 100th colorway. The Nike Dunk was meant for basketball. And for those who wanted that extra edge to look really good. I mean, the only difference between Nike SB and Nike is the fact that they have other colors and SB is embroidered on the tongue. But once they turned on skating that's when the sins piled up. The only civic good they do with Nike SB is the fact that they don't use sweatshops to manufacture them and that's the only reason why I'd buy from them, but I don't skate and I have shoes that prove it (which by the way are also not made in sweatshops), but I really think that Nike SB should put much more heart and soul into their shoes. Because from what I'm seeing even the most creative Nike SB's still have no hearts inside them.

This original post is older, buy I would like to share. At the time of this post (2006) most of the sports you mentioned (skate, surf and snow sports), were only partially commercialized buy huge corporation like NIKE, Reebok, Adidas etcc.. and 5 years later all of these companies have major market shares in all three you mentioned. I would rather have smaller niche companies making higher quality more costumized products than NIKE, Reebok and Adidas. Buy here is the problem. This company are great at marketing. Why, Money and Brand recognition. So no matter what we do to try to stop them, its going to happen anyway. Thanks..

Wow, you left 3 messages and pretended to be 3 different people hahaha...

Nike forces shops to buy so much per month, and that is what puts skateshops out of business... I have seen it way too many times, they are not helping anybody but footlocker, Nike and footlocker have a scheme to put the most popular skate shoe companies out of business along with the core skateshops... So far their plan is working, so once you have to buy all your stuff from CCS or Sports Authority you can be proud to have been part of the downfall of skateboarding as we know it.
