The last two Saturdays in a row at Binary Skatepark I was able to see Tyson skating the street course and mini-ramp.
He’s ten years old, but he hasn’t had a growth spurt yet so he looks like he’s about seven. A year from now he’ll probably be a foot taller.
I watched him trying to do nollie backside 5-0s (at least I think that’s what he was trying) on a box on the street course and not even coming close because the box practically came up to his waist. I was just thinking “Hey, that’s cool, that kid’s really trying to land that and he’s just a tiny guy.”
I was busy trying to get my ramp legs back on the mini ramp. Then Tyson gets on the mini-ramp and all of a sudden it’s like taking a big fat elephant seal that looks completely hopeless on land and putting him in the ocean. This kid transformed into a fluid, confident skater on the mini and shamed the rest of us old guys.
Not only was he pulling all sorts of tricks (5-0 grinds, disasters, blunts, ollie transfers and grabs over the spine, bonelesses, nollie backside disasters with some pop in them–not just turning around on his nose) but he was doing them with style. Like butter.
Watch out for this kid. Give him two years and he’ll be big enough to be killing it on street as well on ramps.

Tyson has a great section in the upcoming Grompire Films release “Rise of the Grompire.”
The dvd will be available at grommie.com in late June.
Its first premiere is June 18th at Binary Skatepark in Draper, UT.
The show starts at 9:00PM. But come early….good times!
